Our Members Speak Out

Question for our next issue: Have you switched from pencil and paper to computerized guest management software? If no, why not? If yes, how would you advise other innkeepers of the pros and cons?

Email your responses to InnkeeperNews@BedandBreakfast.com. If we publish your comments, we'll thank you with a $25 credit in our Featured Properties Auction program!

We Asked: In this difficult economy and world situation, are you seeing a change in your guests and their needs?

Brooks Sunshine Cottage, Lake Placid, NY

"The change that we see in our guests is that they are now looking to go 'back to basics' and enjoy the 'slow pace of life.' Even if it's for a short stay, we can see a difference in their demeanor as they leave our B&B. Their body language declares, 'I feel rested, not rushed.' They walk with a slower gate. They enjoy the simple works of nature and they smile. Oh how they smile!" Bob and Dianna Chandler, Grandma's Cottage Bed and Breakfast, Port Republic, VA

"As a new innkeeper, with twenty years experience working for the airlines, it's been a crazy transition. I truly believe people are going to travel more by car, meaning short driving trips, which is great for B&Bs. It looks like we are going to have a very busy summer with bookings being up. We can only hope for the best." Buddy Marcum, Inn At Long Lake, Naples, ME

"We have found that guests are making reservations for shorter lengths of time, with less lead time - booking today for arrival tomorrow. In addition, they are not traveling as far. We are located near the Canadian border and visits by Canadians has stopped entirely, largely due to unfavorable exchange rates for them. We are not alone; nearly all the Lake Placid area hotels, motels and B&Bs are having the same experience. We are a sports destination resort. Unless a special event is taking place, people are not coming. It will be a difficult spring, summer, and possibly fall for everyone. Young people are getting laid off; older couples are concerned about disease and terrorism. Folks find flying bothersome at best, frightening at worst. Destination resorts should do more advertising in nearby cities within driving distance. We need it." Joe Brooks,Brooks Sunshine Cottage, Lake Placid, NY
