Our Members Speak Out

Sundance Bear Lodge, Mancos, CO

We asked: How is your summer season shaping up?  If it’s looking good, to what do you attribute the strong reservations?  If business is down, what is your strategy to change the trend? Although occupancy rates in the lodging business overall are improving, we are getting reports that B&B reservations in some regions are disappointing.

Question for our July/August issue: According to the YPB&R Leisure Travel Monitor, "37% of leisure travelers took at least one trip with children (a significant increase from the percentage observed in 2004), and fully 26% took at least one vacation alone.” Please tell us what you’re doing to accommodate family and/or single travelers. Thanks!

Email your responses to Sandy.Soule@BedandBreakfast.com. If we publish your comments, we'll thank you with a $25 credit in our Featured Properties Auction program!

“Reservations are super this year! People are booking early – a welcome change from the last two summers. Our June and July reservations are really solid; we could see this in early April.  Why are they booking early? No idea!  What’s great is that our area looks good – and green – again. I would never say the drought is over (one year doesn’t mark the end of a drought.), but this year we got a break.  Travel in our area moves in long slow cycles; I hope the bottom was last year and we are headed up again.  Certainly getting here is no easier than in the past – maybe tougher! United is a primary carrier into Durango and Cortez, and they price it dearly. Now gas prices are up. So the barriers have not disappeared. I’m clueless about where our success comes from, but I love it!” Susan Scott, Sundance Bear Lodge. Mancos CO

“Unlike some previous years, as of May 1, 2005, we had reservations throughout May, June, into July and August. I attribute this to years of being willing to pay for advertising (in the early years more than half of my gross revenue), learning how to make my website more visible, and targeting my freebies better. I post events in my town, including what is playing at the drive-in, on my website. I also have diversified my guest clientele over the years to include rail-trail, by linking to the WV Rails-to-Trails Council; overnight stabling with a link to the WV Horse Council; and motorcycles, with a link to a motorcycle event; plus travelers and business people. I also work closely with the local Welcome Centers, Tourism Division, and CVB. We are known as a great place to stay.”

Inns for Sale

"We advertised our B&B in your Inns for Sale section in January, and started getting inquires a week later. In February, a couple came from Florida to visit us in Cat Spring, Texas. We made a deal, and they begin officially on April the 5th as the new owners. What you are doing really works." Sunny and John Snyder.   Read more...
