Our Members Speak Out

Avellan Inn, A Bed and Breakfast, Newberg, OR

We asked: Tell us what highlights your day! Watching guests' faces light up when they see their room or the breakfast table? Helping guests plan a memorable excursion? Retreating to your quarters for a well-deserved break (and glass of wine?)

Question for our November issue:  Do you have any inspiring, poignant, or humorous hurricane, fire, or other disaster stories to share?  Let us hear from you!

Email your responses to InnkeeperNews@BedandBreakfast.com. If we publish your comments, we'll thank you with a $25 credit in our Featured Properties Auction program!

“Two things definitely remind me of why I am an innkeeper!  One is when someone leaves the breakfast table to get a camera and take a picture of my fruit presentation before anyone eats it!  The other is reading our guest book and comment cards after guests have checked out.  Sometimes we wonder if a guest has had a good time; then we read their note and are pleasantly surprised.  Honest compliments are the best. One recent guest wrote: ‘We have stayed at a lot of B&Bs, and there is a fine line between being friendly and knowing when to give guests their own space.  You managed to balance these perfectly.’  I smiled all day after reading that!” Carol Williams, Avellan Inn, Newberg OR

“Our guests are often first-time visitors to a B&B.  Frequently, they are apprehensive, frightened, excited, and curious, all at the same time.  Before their arrival, they tend to contact us more [than experienced inngoers] and are very honest about their concerns.  I love seeing their faces when I greet them at our front door.  Hesitation turns to warmth and excitement, and their concerns melt away. From the first sip of a welcoming glass of wine or freshly brewed cup of coffee, they are tickled at having taken a risk. As innkeepers, we are so comfortable with strangers in our home that we sometimes forget how potentially nerve-wracking this new experience might be for our guests.  I have stayed in quite a few B&Bs over the years, and sometimes apprehension is indeed justified.  Every time new quests beam brightly about their rooms or our B&B in general, through their eyes, I get to fall in love all over again.” Patrick Arbuckle, Forest Springs B&B, Gresham, OR

“We enjoy getting up early while the house is quiet and watching the sunrise through the big picture window in the kitchen. Preparing the morning meal is a spiritual experience in this setting. We love it when guests are awakened by the tantalizing aromas and are drawn into the kitchen for that first cup of coffee and to share the view!” Debbie Jones & Lucia Osiecki, Meadowlark Inn, Brattleboro VT

“Several things highlight the days at our B&B: reading or hearing guests’ comments about how restful and quiet their stay was; how much they loved their room in particular and our B&B in general; the extra touches we include for their special event or occasion; our hospitality; and the healthy breakfasts we serve.  Probably the most rewarding and fun times are interacting with the guests at the breakfast table when we share lively, funny, interesting, and educational conversations that make running a B&B worth all the hard work and long hours. We have received numerous unexpected gifts and a few dinner invitations from guests who express their gratitude for how we make their stay special.“   Georgeanne Nichols,  Bosch Garten B&B, Leavenworth, WA

“The Blessings of a Bed & Breakfast...........
1. Most of our guests have been incredible blessings.  Their smiles and attitude, graciousness and presence are an incredible benefit.
2.  Guests are usually surprised and delighted when we show them the cottage, most definitely when they see the before and after pictures.
3.  Our greatest pleasure has been to help couples celebrate anniversaries.  We customize packages for their romantic weekend with roses, cheesecake, chocolates, carriage rides, etc. We turn lights down low and have some nice music playing softly in the background.  It's the little things they love.
4.  They usually record their thoughts in the room diary. Renews our faith in good, kind people.
5.  Best of all is knowing that we have been a part of something wonderfully romantic, and because of their stay at our B&B, one more couple has found time for their marriage! “
Michelle Doss, Miss Lissia's Plantation B&B, Water Valley, TX

“I love to show guests to their room and watch their eyes light up when they see it. The lamps are lit, with a nicely laid tray waiting on the bed. Best of all is the honeymoon suite, a guest favorite. Of course, the inn is my pride and joy, and as our guests often note, it shows.”  Buddy Marcum  Inn at Long Lake, Naples, ME
