Welcoming BedandBreakfast.com Gift Certificates/Cards

If you are not yet participating in our U.S. gift certificate program, it’s not too late to sign up! If you are participating, read on for some exciting announcements:

CVS: The $100 Bed and Breakfast Card is now available in more than 5,800 CVS/pharmacy stores. This brings the total number of retail locations to over 15,000, including Costco, Wal-Mart, Office Depot, Brooks-Eckerd, and many others. As you can see from the cards pictured here, they vary in appearance, but in every case, you redeem them in the same way: log in to your Home Base; click Gift Certificates/Cards, and then go to the Redeem certs/cards page. Once you’ve entered your banking information, the money is transferred into your account within four business days (usually less).

This retail exposure introduces millions of people to the B&B experience and is a cost-effective way to attract first-time guests. Studies indicate that perhaps only 3% of travelers have ever tried a B&B, and receiving the gift of a getaway is the perfect way to introduce them to inn travel.

Gift cards have become popular gifts; during the 2006 holiday season, consumers spent an average of $165 on gift cards, generating almost $28 billion in revenue. For Mother’s Day 2007, almost 40% of consumers planned to buy a gift certificate. When survey respondents were asked what features would influence them to purchase a gift card, 58% cited no expiration date or loss of value, while 46% said being able to choose the denomination is important.

Any U.S. member of BedandBreakfast.com is eligible to participate in the program for free; you pay a 15% commission on the face value of the redeemed certificate/card only when you actually receive a reservation from someone using one. Because the value of the card is typically much lower than the cost of the stay, the effective commission is usually around 7%. For example, if guests have a $100 gift certificate and their two-night stay costs $300, the commission is only 15% of the $100, or $15, equal to a 5% commission on the $300 reservation. Because redemptions are handled online, you get your money electronically within a couple of days—no need for mailings or invoices. Click here for more information and here to sign up.

Gift Card Reseller Program – Innkeeper FAQ

When is this program going live?
The program will launch this summer. Final details are being ironed out now, and we’ll be activating the program on our website soon. In the meantime, call or email to let us know you want to participate, and we’ll send you the free display rack and gift cards as soon as they are ready to ship.

Why should I sell BedandBreakfast.com Gift Cards?
Your guests will love being able to give the gift of a B&B getaway to their friends and relatives across the United States, and you will love this easy, risk-free way to generate extra income with no upfront cost or risk! Whether you are offering these in addition to your own gift certificates, or as a stand-alone gift card product welcome at more than 3,500 B&Bs, give it a try and sign-up today!

What if I sell my own gift certificates?
Great! Continue to do so, but offer The Bed and Breakfast Card as an alternative to guests who need a gift for someone in another part of the United States, where a gift certificate from your property would not be appropriate. They’ll appreciate the recommendation of a nationally known name that they can trust, and will love that the cards have no blackout dates, no expiration dates, no fees, and no set denomination.

How do I get started?
Shoot us an email, or call 800-GO-B-AND-B. As soon as they are ready to ship, we’ll ship you a free starter kit with everything you need to start offering the cards to your guests.

How do I sell them?
You sell the card directly to your guests like any other item. Whether you add it to their room bill, or sell it separately, the choice is yours – no hassle, no fuss.

What is the dollar amount, and do I charge tax?
The Bed and Breakfast Card can be sold for any amount the user chooses, from $25 to $2,000. And remember – no tax is charged on gift card purchases. Taxes occur when the recipients redeem them on a future stay.

Is there anything else I need to do to sell them?
At the time of the sale, before you give the card to the purchaser, log in to your Home Base on BedandBreakfast.com, click Sell gift cards, and enter the order and certificate numbers. The cards have no value until you’ve activated them in the system.

What about a receipt?
Once you’ve activated the card for a specific amount, the system will generate a receipt. You must give the receipt to the purchaser along with the card; because the card doesn’t have a specific amount printed on it, the receipt is the consumer’s proof of purchase. You will need an Internet connection for every transaction.

So how does BedandBreakfast.com get its portion of the sale?
You’ll chose the process that works best for you – either use your own credit card processing, keeping the 10% commission and sending 90% to us; OR process the purchase through BedandBreakfast.com and we’ll send the 10% commission to you. All the billing and transfers take place electronically.

Are there any other benefits?
Sure are! No need to worry about complex accounting issues, state regulations, and possible fraud. BedandBreakfast.com handles all of those issues. Your B&B also benefits by being associated with the leading B&B website, BedandBreakfast.com.

What do you mean by a “non-denominational” card?
Unlike gift cards sold in retail stores that have a $50 or $100 price printed on them, these non-denominational cards have no set value until funded by the customer. When a guest purchases a card, they may purchase the card in any whole dollar amount, from $25 to $2,000. You’ll give them the card and a receipt for the amount paid.

Do BedandBreakfast.com Gift Cards expire?
No. Just like BedandBreakfast.com Gift Certificates, these cards never expire. Studies show that consumers love cards that have no blackout dates, no expiration dates, no fees, and no set denomination.

What if the cards are stolen from my property before I have sold/activated them?
Bed and Breakfast Cards have no value until they are activated in the system, and you have NO liability for lost or stolen cards. Nevertheless, if something happens to your cards, please email Support@BedandBreakfast.com or call 1-800-GO-B-AND-B (1-800-462-2632) so that we can remove those numbers from our system.

Can cards be used immediately after purchase?
No. For our protection, there is a seven-day waiting period after purchase before a card can be redeemed.

What if a guest loses a card after it’s been purchased?
If a guest notifies you that the card he/she purchased has been lost or stolen, ask them to contact us at 800-GO-B-AND-B or Support@BedandBreakfast.com, and we will do our best to assist them.

What if I sell all my cards?
When you have sold 15 of your 25 cards, we will automatically send you 25 more cards. Of course, you are always welcome to contact us prior to that for a larger supply.

Can I charge a service fee?
No. The cards can be sold only for the amount credited to the card at time of purchase, as noted in our Terms & Conditions.

My property is not in the United States. Can I participate?
We have been investigating the possibility of international participation in our Gift Card/Certificate program, but regret to report that so far, legal and banking regulations in other countries are making it very difficult. Currently, only properties in the United States may participate.

Join today!
Participation is open to U.S. member properties who welcome the BedandBreakfast.com Gift Certificates/Cards. Please email Sales@BedandBreakfast.com or call 800-GO-B-AND-B for details.

Gift Certificate Testimonials

This is a very user-friendly website. I stumbled upon it several months ago when looking for bed & breakfast locations using Google. It is such a practical idea ... gift recipients can choose the location of the bed & breakfast retreat they want. I've now used this website for several different occasions. Thanks! -- Sharon U.

I love it!! Best ever for gifts and finding wonderful places to stay. Everyone always wants to know where I get such crafty ideas for wedding gifts; I tell them BedandBreakfast.com! (I get a basket and fill it with candles and wine glasses and wine/champagne. Add a few Hershey’s kisses and a gift certificate! It’s perfect!) CHEERS to a wonderful site. Keep up the great work! -- Katie K.
