History and Heritage
Winter and spring are perfect times to work with local museums or historic societies to coordinate with such holidays as the birthdays of Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, or George Washington. Some examples:
Gettysburg, PA: A Civil War Ball in January; a Meeting of Presidents Washington & Lincoln in February; and Custer Returns to Gettysburg in March.
West Point, NY: The United States Military Academy, overlooking the scenic Hudson River, is celebrating its 200th birthday with a museum exhibition called "200 Years of West Point Memories" and a series of special events.
Brooklyn, CT: Connecticut's Quiet Corner is offering a two night "Great American Getaway" package, offering discount rates on food, lodging and more, plus the chance to explore lovely 18th-century villages of white-steepled churches and white clapboard houses overlooking historic town greens.
Really Romantic
Promote the entire month of February for romance, not just February 14th, which falls on a Thursday in 2002. In addition to the usual chocolate, champagne, and flowers, think about offering a sleigh ride or a sunset sail, a private gourmet picnic dinner on the patio or by the fireside.
